The former Springfield High School and Battle Creek Math and Science Center —now The Gathering Place—was purchased in 2014 with a vision to serve as a Burmese entrepreneurial hub. When zoning restrictions changed those plans, the Burma Center adapted by leasing space to community organizations, preserving the building as a vital symbol of belonging despite past considerations to sell it. Today, The Gathering Place serves over 300 people daily through two childcare centers, an alternative high school, and community groups, and by hosting meetings, retreats, weddings, celebrations, and cultural and community events—making it a true community hub. Built in 1956, the aging facility required significant upgrades, prompting a 2021 capital campaign that successfully raised $4.4 million to improve safety, accessibility, and infrastructure for future generations.
